“Maya’s art is a breathtaking act of resistance that is inspiring countless women of color across our region.”

-Edmonds-Woodway High School Black Student Union

About

My work is a step into a colorful new world, where the inner depths of peace are explored. I draw inspiration from connection, consciousness, culture and the resilience of the human spirit. With a style inspired by Afrofuturism, my work celebrates and embraces Narrative Portraiture by storytelling and uniting through art.

Accepting my award at the Capitol.

Bio

Art is not just a creative process, but a profound means of communication. Through her art, Maya embraces storytelling. Creatively expanding on moments, memories, experiences and dreams, using a variety of mediums to capture those she depicts. Maya was born and raised in Seattle. Dedicated at an early age to her craft, she practiced and engaged in several different art classes, with a desire to learn as many techniques as she could. Now at the age of 30 she combines a multitude of mediums and techniques to create vibrant works of art. Art that speaks from her soul. Her work doesn’t just tell stories, it uplifts them, while creating space for connection and community.

Maya’s art has been exhibited throughout Seattle, and her voice has been recognized by organizations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she was honored as a “Changemaker.” She was a  2020 Neddy at Cornish Finalist as well as she was named a 2023 VSA Emerging Young Artist with Disabilities Awardee.
