“Maya’s art is a breathtaking act of resistance that is inspiring countless women of color across our region.”

-Edmonds-Woodway High School Black Student Union

About

Art is not just a creative outlet, but a profound means of communication, self expression, and activism. My mission is to create art that fosters a transformative space where ALL can envision lives beyond the confines of existing structures, while also creating art that explores the depths of peace. I draw inspiration from human connection, consciousness, and the vast universe, with a style that incorporates elements of Pop Art. Placing us in positions that reveal the inherent beauty and extraordinary power within us all.

Accepting my award at the Capitol.

Bio

Maya has embraced art as a powerful and transformative force throughout their journey as a professional multimedia artist. As a Black woman living with a chronic illness, they found that art became more than just a creative outlet, it became a way to build meaningful connections. Driven by a passion for unity and self-discovery, Maya’s work seeks to bridge societal divides and, most importantly, uplift and empower BIPOC. Through their art, they amplifies stories of resilience, fosters spaces for empowerment, and inspires unity and change. Mayas artwork has been exhibited all over Seattle, Washington. They were nominated by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a “Changemaker,” and was a grantee of the Jordan Schnitzer Black Lives Matter Artist Grant. More recently they were a VSA Emerging Young Artist with Disabilities Awardee, and a Neddy at Cornish Finalist.
